What should we do if a player is injured during play?
Injuries happen, but we want to make sure everyone is ok before they play again.
If you or a player on your team is injured during a game, please refer to the best practices list below:
Player is able to leave the field of play and is not in distress: The player should assess if they are able to continue. If not, they should immediately leave the playing area or bench and seek medical treatment as needed. If the injury is a potential concussion, the player should not continue and immediately seek medical attention.
Player is able to leave the field of play but then experiences signs of distress: Inform LUG Game Day staff and the venue staff immediately. The player and the team will determine if an ambulance is required. If not, the team, family, friends can assist the player to seek immediate medical attention. If an ambulance is required, the player, team or LUG Game Day staff can inform the venue to initiate the venue specific emergency protocol for calling an ambulance. In the event there is no venue protocol, players, teammates, friends, and any others in attendance should call an ambulance as soon as it is identified that an ambulance is needed.
Player is not able to leave the field of play and requires an ambulance: The player, teammates, officials or LUG Game Day staff should identify an appropriate person nearby to go inform the venue to initiate the venue specific emergency protocol for calling an ambulance. If no venue staff is nearby, players, captains, fans should take action to call an ambulance immediately.
Note: the timekeeper does not stop the game clock for an injury and will continue through any scheduled period breaks and the start of the next period if applicable. Play will continue when/if possible.
Note: If the game has been more than 50% played, the game will count as played with the score at the injury stoppage recorded as the final score.
